We’ve added Lava Rock to the stones in AquaDraft. It comes in two types with different looks: Type I and Type II.
What is lava rock?
Lava rock is volcanic lava that has cooled and hardened. Gas escaping as it set leaves holes behind, so the surface is rough and full of pores. It is light for its size, and plant roots and moss catch easily on that porous surface, which is why it is a popular base for attaching plants in planted tanks.
Two types with different looks
- Type I — A lighter grey rock covered in fine pores all over. Its lumpy shape keeps some roundness.
- Type II — A reddish brown-grey rock, a little darker than Type I. It has an angular outline with larger holes scattered across it and a pointed peak.
Both are about the size of your palm. They work well for filling gaps in a layout, such as tucked against the base of driftwood or lined up in front of plants. Mixing the two types helps avoid the flat look of the same rock repeated.
